The death toll from the massive earthquake and tidal wave event in the far north has climbed to at least 1,000, Alaska officials announced Wednesday.
The Alaskan National Guard announced Wednesday that a total of 883 people have been killed and 1,824 injured, the Alaska Department of Health said in a statement.
The latest death toll came just two days after the state’s governor announced the death toll had jumped to 1,788.
“It is clear that the public was not adequately prepared for this natural disaster and we are taking every precaution necessary to keep Alaska safe,” Alaska Gov.
Bill Walker said in the statement.
